Organizing a garage makes life easier all year round, as more space is available and you can quickly find exactly the tool or item you need.
It may seem daunting to get rid of the garbage and figure out how to organize a garage, but if you do it step by step it will be easier.
How to organize a garage step by step
Workshop organization Step 1: Perform triage
The first sorting
First, check each item in your garage and separate the items by category. When sorting, take everything out of the garage. The first sorting should be in the categories "Keep", "Donate" and "Recycle bin".
If you are not using an item and it is in poor condition, throw it away. If it is useful, but not for you, pass it on, take it to a mail order company, or donate it to a charity to get the tax deduction. The things you want and need are set aside in a separate stack.
After subdividing the items into the starting categories, you can focus on this pile. Categorize the remaining items further into more specific categories. Some common for the workshop organization are: painting supplies, tools, sports equipment, trash cans and recycling containers, and lawn equipment.
Sorting into specific categories gives you a better idea of what type of storage containers and storage space you need.
A garage is exposed to water, oil leaks and spilled water, so it must be easy to clean. Now that everything is done, it's the perfect time to paint and protect it.
Paint the walls and floor with a high quality, washable paint before installing storage cabinets or shelves.
The cabinets should always be waterproof and protrude above the floor. While it may be tempting to use these old wood or fiber board cabinets from your kitchen remodeling, exposing the garage to the elements (especially water) requires waterproof and elevated storage.
Try to use epoxy floor paints for floors. They are dirt-repellent and easy to clean. New systems with vinyl chips adhere to a base coat and offer an attractive speckled finish, similar to terrazzo or granite. The best part? You clean up easily!
Workshop organization Step 3: Temporary storage
If items can not stay overnight in the garage or driveway while the job is done and the paint dries, call a container warehouse like PODS. They will hand over a storage unit that can remain on site or be moved to an external warehouse until completion of the garage work.
